Character Education

Character Counts!Character Education

We know that when students feel capable of learning, experience success, and can link what is learned to the world around them, they excel. When we acknowledge and recognize behaviors that are respectful and responsible, we will see an increase in those behaviors. Dot Woodfn, author of a paper titled “Full Esteem Ahead”, writes “the idea that we can build self-esteem in others is probably the single biggest misconception that people have about self-esteem. We can ‘nurture’, but we cannot build.”

Character education is increasingly becoming an integral part of learning environments, particularly in light of incidents of bullying, teasing and the like. Ladera’s program involves monthly themes that teachers and staff weave into their daily activities. Our students will see these character keys all around campus and demonstrate their understanding of these concepts in their class discussions and written work. Children will be recognized at our monthly assemblies for demonstrating these traits.

The Character Keys for this year are:
September Respect
October Citizenship
November Kindness
December
Cooperation
January Responsibility
February Gratitude
March Perseverence
April Honesty
May Trustworthiness
June Integrity

Ladera students will be encouraged to reach their highest potential n a positive, supportive and productive environment, which develops mutual respect, a sense of responsibility, and encourages open communication. The staff is committed to working in partnership with families and community to address this very important part of Ladera’s program.

The students will be learning some songs, using the character eduction words. If you would like to see what they'll be singing, see these:
