GATE Program
Dear Ladera Gate Parents,
Welcome back! Throughout the year I will be attending the district GATE DAC meetings and will be able to share my knowledge as well as keep you informed of upcoming events as the year progresses.
For those of you who will be requesting that your child(ren) be tested for GATE this year, please submit your request to your teacher asap. The teachers are to have all submission forms for all Identification turned in by November 20th. The GATE Testing will occur in February, 2010.
This year all GATE DAC meetings will occur every other month, with the next meeting scheduled for December 7th. This meeting is open to ALL. I encourage you to attend to hear what Dr. Linda Calvin, Director of Pupil Services, has to say. It is nice to be in a room with other parents who not only support the GATE program, but who also share the same views, concerns and attitudes of their children with the rest of us.
Every month I will update the website with an article I have received or with other important information, so please check back regularly.
IF you would like to be added to my GATE Dac email distribution list, please email me and I will add you to my distribution list.

Standards for Gifted and Talented Students include the following:
Program Design
- There is a District Advisory Council for GATE. The group meets once a month to discuss program needs. Ladera's representative brings back the information to disseminate to the parents of the GATE children.
- Gifted learners are cluster grouped at Ladera. This cluster design provides true intellectual peers and thereby facilitates dynamic interaction and is an important factor in meeting the social and emotional needs of GATE children.
- Ladera has one teacher as the GATE coordinator. This teacher models demonstration lessons and brings information to the staff from GATE meetings.
-
Identification
- Ladera's identification procedures are equitable, comprehensive, and ongoing. They reflect the district's definition of giftedness and its relationship to current state criteria.
- The staff receives training about the characteristics of gifted learners.
- Parent permission is on file for students to participate.
- Once identified, the student remains in the GATE program
Curriculum and Instruction
- Ladera develops differentiated curriculum, instructional models, and strategies that are aligned with and extend the state academic content standards and curriculum frameworks.
- The curriculum is scheduled on a regular basis and is integral to the school day.
- The differentiated curriculum is taught with appropriate materials and technology.
- Opportunities for independent study are offered.
Social and Emotional Development
- Teachers, parents, and administrators, and counselors are provided with information regarding the related social and emotional development.
- Teachers are trained to recognize symptoms of at-risk behavior in the GATE student.
Professional Development
- Professional development opportunities are offered during the year to teachers to support and improve educational practices.
Parent and Community Involvement
- An active GATE advisory committee with parent involvement is supported by the district.
